OCEAN STEAMING.
The following account of a voyage from New York to Liverpool will confirm belief in the practicability of a quick passage via the Cape of Good Hope. Prom the 'times of the si-h June, we give this excerpt The Oceanic, Captain W. H. Thompson, one of the fine new steamers belonging to the White Star line, has just completed a remarkable run across the Atlantic. She left New York on the 3rd instant at 3.30 p.m. From her log it appesrs that by noon on the 4th she had traversed 245 miles, the weather being calm. On the following day, with the wind blowing strongly from N. to N.N. W., the vessel rau 320 knots. On the 6th, the wind beiog strong from N.W., the Oceanic logged 384, one of the most extraordinary performances on record; ar.d on the 7th, with a moderate breeze from N.N.W. she travelled 340 miles. On ihe Bth, 334 miles were ran j on the 9th, when there was a p werful wind from N.W. 364 miles ; on the 10th with moderate wil d from W. N.W., 353 miles ; and on the Utb, when there was a gentle breeze from N. N r . W., she ran from latitude 51.11. longitude 15.0, 211 miles, arriving at Roche’s Point at 10 minutes to 6 in the morning. At 9.30 a.m. the Oceanic left Queenstown, and arrived at the Bell Buoy at 3.20 cu Tuesday morning, and after waiting for high water to cross the bar, proceeded to luy anchorage in the Mersey, which she reached a few minutes after seven, thus making tl o entire passage from New York to Liverpool in a little over nine days. The Oceanic had 240 saloon passengers, the largest number ever carried across the Atlantic by one versel. Tldi vessel sailed 2551 miles in 183 hours, an average of fourteen miles per hour.
