THE RIFLE CHALLENGE.
To the Editor. Sir,—ln tins morning’s issue of the Olago Daily Times, appears au advert semeut signed by one “ Walter Scott.” Who is this Walter Scott ?—surely not the great poet whose centenary we have just celebrated with, so much eclat, or is lie a second Rip I Van Winkle who has just woke up after a long sleep '! Presuming that he is not tboroughly awake, allow me to enlighten him upon the subject of his advertisement. Surely lie could have ascertained from the same channel that he observed the challenge of Mr Wa’ker, that the same had been accepted on behalf of our volunteers by Mr Kennedy, a gentleman well-known in Dijne4in an 4 from newspaper report, that Captain Copeland was authorised to make the necessary arrangements for carrying out the matter. Hoping that Walter Scott will let the public know who he really is, as also Mr Walker, of Auckland, who no doubt will be able to take up his acceptance for the fifty pounds.—l am, &c., yours, Akothbb Scott. August 11, 1871.
