BISHOP MORAN IN REPLY.
To thn Editor. Sik—Although your correspondent ‘Omega’ has endeavored' to conceal himself like a coward behind the disguise/ of qn assumed name, it is pretty generally'known who he is. Not' for' Jiis sake then, for his grossness has rendered him unworthy of further notice, but for the sake'of those - whom he has unhappily the power to ipflifeuce, I shall translate the disputed sentence from the oath taken by bishops at, their, .consecration, though I feel assured this-wiU: bo considered unnecessary by every sc Ini’ar,- „The following is'the meaning of .the words!;. .“1 shall follow heretics; Ac,, pci severing! y, i« order to win them back hud I >sliaHrcoml).at;their errors and efforts.” This .is the meaning I attach to the words when I’took the oath, and this is the meaning intended by the Church. I may add that, If you will’ be so good as to consultT3r Smith’s Dictionary, you will find that he devotes considerable space to the Word 1 ■perstqiW,*’, and that.?,although he gives twelve illustrations of rtia meanings, “ to. persecute!” is.nqti amongst them. I.am, &c., .... + P*; MPSAS, Rhjhpp of rßunedin. -■ August 5, 1871. ! . f /
