Melbourne, July 27. Mr Walsh, the new AttorneyGeneral, has been returned for Ballarat unopposed. On the re-assembly of the Parliament the Government had a following of thirty-one on their side of the House, while thirty-six members found seats on the Opposition benches. An interim vote of LI 30,000 for salaries was passed without opposition. The financial statement will be made in August 1, and there is considerable excitement in commercial circles in reference to the fiscal policy of the new Government. A deputation of soft-goods men interviewed the Government in reference to drawbacks on exports, and requested that duties should be estimated by measurement instead of ad valorem . The Government declined to disclose their fiscal policy before it was laid before Parliament. The American importers have succeeded in getting the Commissioner of Customs to reckon the dollar at 3s 9d instead of 4s.

The ministerial banquet at Castlemain was a success. Mr Woods, in the Assembly, proposes to sell the Government railways, and extend railway communication. Christchurch, August 1, A nam named Edward Scrivener, who was under magisterial enquiry on suspicion of being a lunatic, was found dead in one of the police-cells this morning. The coacli from Doyleston to Burnham railway station was upset at the Selwyu river, and the driver and the hoy drowned. At the Lytteltou station to-day, a man, name unknown, was killed by falling between two buffers.
