EDUCATION BOARD.
The half-yearly statutory meeting of the Board was held at the Superintendent’s office to-day. Present —His Honor the Superintendent in the chair, Messrs Keid, Bradshaw, Gutten, Bathgate, and the Secretary (Mr Hislop.) The Rev. W. Johnston and Mr N. Y. Wales attended as a deputation from Sawyer’. Bay, and applied that that district should be proclaimed an educational district. It was urged that there was a large attendance at the Sawyer’s Bay school, which was at present a side school, 45 being the average number of pupils. The present building was very small. There were 13 girls attending the school of 9 years and upwards ; and the only instruction they received was gratuitously given by the master’s wife. An opinion having been expressed by some members of tbe Board that many of the children might be well sent to ibe For. Chalmers Grammar Schod, which was only a couple of miles di taut from Sawyer’s Bay, and was readied by a good road, the Rev. Mr Johnston remarked that the cost to the Government would he greater if the children went to the I’ort Chalmers, lh°n if the present application were granted. The qdrool was a necessity, and the teacher a very successful one. The teahing in it was excellent, all the scholars were fully up to the mark ; and tbe school was entitled to rank with many of greater pretensions. The application was declined. Mr J. P. Hepburn, on behalf of the Waik iri school committee, applied that a schoolmistress might be appointed to that school. The school at present sustains a master, a sewing mistress, and a pupil teacher; the average daily attendance being 140. The sewing mistress gratuitously performed the duties of mistress, necessitating the employment by her of a servant to attend her household duties, so that the L3O received by her as sewing mistress did not recompense heifer In r services. It was pointed out by a member of the Board that her husband received a total salary of L 220. After considerable discussion the matter was referred to tbe pjnsideration of tbe Executive, the Superintendeut stating that he did not like to negative the application, A deputation from Kaikorai applied to have the schoolmistress’s salary increased to L 75 per annum, and for additional accommodation. It was agreed to refer the question of the expediency of appointing a pupil teacher and that of fresh buildings to the Provincial Treasurer. A deputation from Saddle Hill asked for permission to set aside a portion of the school foes for school repairs and incidental expenses, The Secretary stated that the attendance had been so small for some time past, that he felt disposed to recommend that the school should be placed in the position of a side school. Last winter the attendance was only 17, which was decidedly too small for a school towards which Government contributed LIOO. The deputation asserted that the small attendance in winter was owing to there being no roads in tbe district. During the last six months the attendance was 35, and the commitee knew of 22 other children who would have been at school hut for tbe existence of a difference between the committee and the mastep. The inspector was instructed tq yiaU and report upon the schqol—intimation tq be given to £lie committee that unless the attendance yvas larger than last year’s, the Boa d would consider the propriety of turning it into a schoql. Messrs Papoford and M’Neill attended as a deputation from Moroington to apply for tbe removal of Mr A. Russell from his office as teacher, hut the matter -was postponed, because Mr Bust ell bad not received notice of. the application. The deputation then made appliaation to be allowed to set aside a portion of the school fees for the schoolmistress’s salary, which, after considerable discussion, was allowed. The following matters were dealt with : Oamaru School Committee applied for an assistant master and pupil teacher. LSO voted towards the salary of an assistant master ; pupil teacher refused.
