There were present at this afternoon’s ■ the .Mayor and all the councillors, with the, exception of Mr Cargill. A letter .was’read from the Provincial’ Secretary,, stating in respect of , the Corporation’s claim, for arrears of salary to the Inspector of Nuisapecs, that the Government had agreed to place the sura of L 137 10s on ' the supplementary'estimates,’'onaccount of the vote of L 275 in T808; a moiety of which only had been paid; but the Govcrmiijeut : would not recognise any furthrr liability; At the 1 suggestion of the Mayor, who considered that the Corporation'had a thoroughly fair and legal clainu for the whole' amount asked for. The mritter was referred to a special committee, It was also intimated that the Provincial Government would take charge in the Assembly of the the Bill to set apart a portion of the Town Belt for the purposes of' a cemetery, A quantity of . correspondence, which possessed no features of interest, was summarily dealt with. It was resolved, on the application of the Mornington Road Board, to place in repair a footway leading from the head of High street to Mornington. The. Inspector of Carriages reported that express owners complain of the drivers of the Caver-' sham ’buses being allowed to carry goods. The Mayor thought it unwise to harass people too much. No action was taken in the matt r. The Preserves Committee reported, in reference to the application of Mr Calcutt for certain Corporation sections at-Waihola and Cast Taieri free of charge, for the purpose of the Clutlla Railway, that in view of the ultimate benefit to the City from the opening of the railway, the application should bo granted. , Mr Barnes submitred that it should be made a sine qua non to handing iver laud that the Government should carry the line outside of [Crawford street;. The Mayor pointed out that the value of the laud proposed to be given was L4O, while, to do what was asked by Councillor Barnes involved an expenditure of LIOOO. It was agreed to suggest to the Goveriuapjjt the propriety of carrying the line 'outside of Crawford street. y .
