Several buildings iu Westport have had to be'demolished in consequence of the encroachment of the sea. The Hon. Alfred Domett, has, we learn, obtained leave of absence, and will visit England shortly. The prospectus of an Auckland Whaling Company, with a capital of L 20,000 has been issued. On June 30, the County of Westland owed L14,()0I), and had assets to the value of L 9,280. The General Government has advanced the County of Westland the sum of L 7.500, secured against the sinking funds yet to be realised on the Canterbury loans. A young man named John Crosbie, drowned recently near Auckland, while on a fishipg excursion His companion E. Pelley, succeeded in swimming ashore. In a discussion in the Auckland City Council on the question of licensing liawkera, one councillor suggested that commercial travellers should be included in the list requiring a licence, as tbey carried about samples, and peddled goods to the injury of Auckland importers, in exactly same way as peddlers interfered with the business of the shopkeepers.
The b.b. Albion is under arrest by order of the Vice- Admiralty Court,. Melbourne, in consequence of two claims against the ship, one for materials supplied, and the other on behalf of the late Captain M. F. Dunn. A new newspaper has been ushered into existence at Blenheim. Blenheim contains 400 inhabitants, and had already four journals. Now there is a fifth newspaper called the Herald. It is a little larger than a sheet of note paper. If it is to be considered as an intelligent expre-sion of public opinion, then we are under the impression that public opinion in Marlborough is not Neiy intelligent. _____
