PORT CHALMERS MAYORALTY.
The nomination for the Mayoralty of Tort Chalmers took place at the Town Hall at noon to-day. About forty ratepayers were present. Mr Kettle proposed, and Mr J. Dryalalc seconded, Mr Henry Dench for Mayor, Mr John Thomson (Dalkeith) pmposed, and Mr John Crickmore seconded, Mr Hugh M'Dermid. The Returning Officer then said that, as there was more than one candidate, an election would be held, and the state of the poll declared at the Town Hall on Friday, the 21st inst., at 4 p.m. The ratepayers could now elect a chairman to hear the addresses, and ask the candidates any (locations, &c. , , , . . , MrO. L. Asher was elected chairman, who called upon . , Mr Henry Dench, who stated the reasons why he had aspired to the honor of occupying the Mayor’s chair. He believed tfcat should Mr M'Dermid be again elected, that water, if brought ip, would be brought ip at a great cost to the ratepayers. It would be better for Mr M'Dermid to retire from the office, as he was personally interested in the supply ; and more good might be effected if Councillor Milh.r would also
retire. He would have the honor of addressing the ratepayers on Thursday evening on the many questions in which they were interested.
Mr H. M'Dkrmid, in a brief, temperate speech, expressed his astonishment at Mr Dench’s attack, and made statements which refuted the arguments that had been brought against his candidature. He would address a public meeting of the ratepayers, and he would be happy to answer any questions. After a few questions had been satisfactorily answered, A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
