PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

This Day, This afternoon when the second reading of the Education Reserves Bill was moved Mr Haughton moved an amendment provid* mg that the system of Education be amen, ded, and that provision be made for the support of Roman Catholic schools. He pointed out that the Roman Catholics could not take advantage of the provisions of the educational arrangements on religious grounds. He appealed to the sense of justice of the Council, on tbegroundthat contributing in equal proportion to the revenue, they had a light to choose their own mode of teaching children, and pointed out that the educational system of Scotland was originated by the Roman Catholics. He therefore asked that provision should be made for the Roman Catholics to have their prop ntionate share of the revenues devoted to education for the special support of their own common and high schools. .Mr G-. F. C. Browne seconded the motion, although -his opinion only expended to providing a purely secular educaCion in all schools. Air E. B. Cargill opposed -he motion on the ground that, if carried, it would completely reverse the educational Sj stem of the Province, which had thus far worked well. If the motley.* were adopte i, every sect would have an equal right to their own schools, no matter how weak they were. Dr. Webster, Mr Cutten, anlthg Provincial Secretary opposed, the motion. (Left sitting.)
