ELECTION FOR MAYOR.
Mr Tiioxemax met the electors of Bell Ward at the iloyal George Hotel ; there was a very large attendance, and Mr William Woodland was called to the chair, who ntroduced the candidate. Mr ThoxbsuU da coming forward was
greeted with considerable applause. He craved the indulgence of the meeting on account of severe indisposition, stating that bavin" had the honor to represent Hell Warden the City Connci 1 , he rh emed it his first duty to call together the citizens of that Ward to explain his views, and to ask their support in the forthcoming contest mr the Mayoralty. Mr Thoneman th n went into matters municipal, planning the action he had taken in the various matters brought before the Council, more particularly with reference to bis ow . Ward. At the conclus.on of his address, which occupied upwards of an hour, the candidate, who was most attentively listened to and frequently applauded, stated that he should be glad to answer any questions. In answer to Mr Hasskias, Mr Thoneman s'ated that both before and since Mr Birch had announced himself as a candidate, Mr Fish had stated that he would not come forward to contest the clection. In answer to Mr Smith, Mr Thoneman stated that, m his opinion, the City Surveyor had proved himself a good and faithful servant. In answei to Mr Pay, Mr Thoneman stated that the Council had decided to allow reasonable time for the payment of kerbing in cases where householders asked for delay; but of course all persons that were able to pay should bo required to do so forthwith. , , , Some other questions having been asked Paterson proposed, “ That Mr Tlmneman is a lit and proper person to fill the office of Mayor of Dunedin, and that this meeting pledges itself to support him; whicV bcing seconded by Mr Merrie was carried by acclamation; but one hand (a very dirty ®nc) being held up to the conthe usual formalities, the meeting closed with “ Three cheers for Thoneman.
