ELECTION PLEDGES.
To the Editor. Sir —The Estimates arenowpassed, and Mr Reid is master of the occasion ; and amongst the group pf thpse who arp intended to ad; vise his Honor is Mr Bathgate, who holds the snug appointment of Provincial Solicitor. This was nothing more than should bo ex* pected, considering the very euthus astic support Mr Bathgate and the Southern League extended to Mr Iteid. Although the latter gentleman defamed all politicians of the Fox and Vogel school as being truauts
to the interests of Otago, and although the same stump patriot stated publicly he would devote his services to the -welfare of the 1 roviocc for the sum of Ll5O per annum, I find this same gentleman, for himself and clerk, pocketing the munificent snra of L7OO per annum. What political humbug ! Wbat want of political consistency ! Where are now the vaunted and sweeping assertions of retrenchment ? Will the people patiently allow such charlatanism, and permit themselves to he hoodwinked and cajoled by such vapid, unmeaning utterances ? But it serves them right—with the Dunedinites, political audacity is preferable to humble modesty, I am, &c., Anti- League.
