(from gheville’s telegram company, reuter’s agents.) Christchurch, July 5, Mr Hewlings, of Timaru, has been appointed Chief Surveyor of the Province, in the room of the late Mr Davie. The Provincial Council meets on July 14. Queenstown, July 5. The Fourth of July was celebrated with great spirit, both at the Arrow and Queenstown, though the weather was bitter cold. The most successful affair was a concert and ball held in the public school in aid of the Church of England Funds. Both affairs were crowded, Mining operations are generally suspended during the frost. Bluff, July 5. The schooner Cora, Bussell master, while beating in struck on Lewais point, but Avas brought up and got to the wharf with four feet of water in her hold. Fifty bags of lime amongst the curgo has taken fire and is being discharged rapidly.
