IN REJOSEPH WILLIAM HUTCHISON
To the Editor, Sir,— An incorrect report of the judgment given by Mr Justice Chapman, in re Joseph William Hutchison, a bankrupt, which appeared in the Otago Daily Times , has excited so much comment in the town, that 1 trust you will allow me to explain that the words ‘‘of the former manager,” were interpolated in the report without my. knowledge or consent- Tha alteration was made after I had examined the proofs and left the office on Monday night, and I did not become aware of it until Tuesday afternoon. The report; as sent in by me to the printers, and set up in type, terminated as follows He could pot help saying, ajso, that the conduct of the Bank of New South Waies had been not less reckless than the conduct of the bankrupt.” On learning of the alteration, I represented to the editor of the paper that he ought, in fairness, to allow me to explain, through the medium of tho Otago Daily Times, that the erroneous words were not mine. This he refused to do ; promising, however, that he would fully exculpate me from blame. You will find, on reference to this morning’s paper that he has not fulfilled his promise, but has written a paragraph bearing a double meaning, and which leaves it open to question whether the words originally published were not contained in my report.—Yours, &c. The Law Reporter of the “Otago Daily Times.” June 27.
