MAYOR’S COURT.

This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor and the Hon. Dr. Buchanan, J.P.) I) RUN K KN NESS. James Sullivan, against whom there were 25 previous convictions, was fined 40s or 14 days imprisonment ; and was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment additional for habitual drunkenness, alLeoed arson. Fred. W. Hoichclt was charged with setting lire to his premises iu.Princcs-strect, with intent to defraud the New Zealand Insurance Company. After some preliminary evidence, which was a repetition of that given at the Coroner’s inquiry, had been given, Mr James Smith, who appeared for the prosecution, applied for a remand until Monday next, which was granted. Mr Sander’, for Mr.Barlo”, pointed out that as a public tribunal had already found that the fire had been accidentally caused, the prisoner should be admitted to bail iu the ordinary way. The Mayor was willing to admit that the application for bail came with greater force then it did on the former occasion. Mr Smith would not oppose the granting of proper bail, but would remind their worships that they could not take cognisance ol what has taken place elsewhere ; thdr sole duty was to act upon the evidence brought before them. At a late period of the day the Bench intimated that bail would be accepted—prisoner iu a surety of LSOO, and two sureties ol L3OO each. Th; neee-sary bail was at once obtained, Moss's Goldstein and M‘Donald becoming bondsmen.
