Provincial Council.— The business this afternoon was unimportant.
The New Zealand Institute. —We have received Volume Three of the “ Transactions of the New Zealand Institute.” Two parts were issued previously—one comprising the record of -w hat was done in Wellington, Auckland, Canterbury, and Otago from January to July, 1870 ; the second in those Provinces and Nelson, from August to December ; and these, with the main body of the work delayed on account of the illustrations, complete tho volume. The papers on the zoology, botany, and geology of the country are very interesting. The Mining Conference. This opinion of the mining conference appeared in a goldiiclds paper So the mining conference is over ; and the Smilet has got a few to row his stroke. Heaven help the miners of Otago. If the conference represents their ideas of political economy, the sooner all hands are shipped off to Yarra Bend the batter for the future of the country.
Gaol Return. —The following is the state of H. M. Gaol, Dunedin, for the week ending 17th June Awaiting trial, 1 man, I woman ; under remand, 2 men, 1 woman ; [>enal servitude, 90 men, 0 women ; hard abor, 50 men, 10 women ; imprisonment, 0 nien, 0 women ; in default of bail, 1 man, 0 women ; debtors, 2 men, 0 women. Total, men 146 ; women, IS. Received during the week, 11 men, 5 women. Discharged 6 men, 3 women. Pout Chalmers Railway Jetty.— The first pile of the new railway jetty at Port Chalmers was driven last Saturday afternoon. The pile which is said to be a central one, has been driven to test the character of the bottom, which is said to consist of several feet of mud, necessitating the use of long piles for the contemplated work. The experimental pile has been driven on' the opposite side of the bay, to that on which the Graving Dock has been constructed, and stands between two and three hundred yards from the shore, and in a line with the Port |Chalmers hotel and Otago Heads. The meeting of the members of Court Enterprise, A.0.F., will be held at the Royal George Hotel this evening, at 7 o’clock, instead of 8 o’clock, as already announced.
