CRAWFORD STREET RAILWAY.

■ To the Editor. Sib,—This matter is again, cropping out, our Mayor qoumingly working with and for a party who v/ish up railway to tpuoh this street 66 ‘ feet wide. ' J entirely object to his favouring any party* he ought to seek the advice of his councillors. * Hb has tried the leading process and has attempted to school us. We all know his failure, but he can yet do the citizens service by asking Council on railway policy and roads, but, .he had bettor be cautiohs and not put his foot in it. The question at issue is—shall this street be dealt with in any other way than streets fronting the Mers.cy, the Clyde, and the Tay, where for miles the vessels lie alongside the rivei’, aud the street has i s entire width occupied by quay, street, and footway, and this space, excepting footway, is to bo traversed by railways adapted to tbe trade required, Shall we, therefore, with onr crippled means, choke the enterprizes ore they have scon the light. : The wayfarers ju this street will he quite satisfied, as at home, with one footway, leaving the other to be occurded by the railway, and, by and bye, doubtless there will be a quay wall outside of this occupied by vessels taking the fruits of our industry at the Dunedin dock, instead of at Port Chambers. “We maun creep afore we gang,” and we will be more certain to do things well. I insist on the Provincial Council taking a stand against these attempts to extort uncalled-for and needless expenditure, and to call for evidence as to the policy adopted at home. . I am, Ac., Observer.
