In San Francisco, Mrs Laura D. Fair, after twenty-four days’ trial, lias be n convicted of murder in the first degree, after a trial of a month for the shooting of her paramour, A. H. Crittendon, a prominent of the city, on biard of the Oakland ferry boat, and in presence of Crittenden’s wife and family. The prisoner has applied f(»r a new trial. She pleads temporary insanity. The trial caused great excitement throughout the country. Mr William EL Webb, the owner of the new Australian and San Francisco steamship line has been enthusiastically welcomed by the Mechanic’s Institute of San Francisco. Major Selby, Mr Hallidic, the president of the Mechanics’ Institute, and many other gentleman made congratulatory speeches, expressing the deep sense of the good done to the Pacific Coast by the Australian line.
