“ROBBING THE DEAD.”
To the Editor. Slß—Permit me, through the medium of your valuable journal, to call attention to the following circumstance, which has justly caused not a little uneasiness in this district. As the subject is of vital importance, not only to public safety but to the security of persons and property, especially on isolated goldfieds, I trust that the notice'of the matter will be the means of at least clearing up the reputation of those implicated. With this view I will, withqut further comment, state shortly the authenticated particulars which, I presume, will sufficiently speak for themselves.
It appears that some few months ago a miner, highly respected in this district, died intestate j and according to, I believe, an illegal custom, his effects were disposed of by the police, with the exception of some valuable “nuggets,” which 1 am positively informed were not accounted for. The case was repot ted to the proper authority, but through some unaccountable shuffling, the subject was never inquired into, though the informant. an ex-constable, was detained in this (list ict for upwards of six weeks awaiting an inquiry, which the head of the dc» partment promised would take place, I now find that the only person who could substantiate this ignominious charge of “robbing the dead,” has been “ tampered with, or I might say bribed,” in order to smother the fuither investigation of the subject, which lias caused unlimited disgust,in the minds of the unfortunate deceased’s acquaintances and fellow-miners throughout this populous goldfield. In conclusion, I trust that the case will receive the attention of those whoso acts have given rise to such unpleasant reflections. I am, &c., Pro Bono Puauco. One Spec Gully, Hogburn, May 30.
