THE SABBATH QUESTION.
To the Editor. Slß.—Your correspondent in Monday’s issue subscribing himself A Man.’ says I have made enquiries, and so far as* j cover, Sunday work is entirely at theoption of the men employed ; and I know that so far as the Harbor Company’s men are concemed, it is distinctly understood that they need only mention an objection to Sunday work and they are neither required nor asked to attend on that day.” This language " framed with lie skill of a Jesuit; mul conveys a false impression by a mental reservation. “A Man” would have stated the truth if he had added “ nor on any other day will the Harbor Company deny that refusal to do Sunday work on the part of their employes, would entail dismission. Let me take the present opportunity of asking Jhose’ gentlemen (I am clad to know this does dot apply to all) if they are resolved to continue the Sabbath traffic, so unfair to their servants, so injurious to their mnra sense, and possibly the cause of their eternal ruin ? Several of the men would be members of Christian churches, and teachers in Sabbath schools, but for the inconsistent position in which their Sunday labor would place them. What a weight of guilt must rest on the consciences of those gentlemen . What account will they give at the day of judgment; K the company will not stop unholy traffic, then I call upon the servants as a body to take the matter into their own hands. 3 The Christian public of Otago will stand by them, lam prepared myself to head a subscription list with LlO, for a suatentatiqn fund, till the men are otherwise comfortably settled, Smoult Smalley.
