The Omco left Melbourne on Saturday, the 20th instant; passed the Alhambra of Swan Island, at 5.45 p.m. on the 21st; arrived at the Bluff at 1.30 turn, to day. She sails lor Dunedin to-night. The Victorian budget proposes a 21 per cent property tax ; an increase in the tariff generally in the direction of protection of colonial manufactures ; a slight increase on grain in order to meet a deficiency of L 300,000 between the estimated revenue and the expenditure. It is proposed to reduce the town postage to J> ( l ) and intercolonial to the the uniform rate of 3d. The proposal is unsatisfactory to the protectionists, and opposition is offered. The debate is unconoluded. The recent large and mysterious robberies of opium and kerosene from the bonded stores, have been traced to Taylor a locker, who has been committed for trial. Hugh Glass, after a long illness, died from an over dose of chloral, taken to produce sleep. Flour is firm at LI7. Victorian wheat, 7s 3d ; Adelaide wheat, 7s Bd. The census returns give the approximate population of the Colony as 730,000. Arrived, Omco and Tararua. Sydney. The Assembly passed a resolution giving LISOO annual subsidy to the Californian mail service for five years. The steamer Platypus has been succesfully raised. A smart shock of earthquake was felt at Mudgee on the 15th. Adelaide. The Hon. H. Parkcs of Sydney had an interview with the Government relative to the Californian mail route. The Press advocate its favorable consideration. A mail will be made up for the route on June 1 ; Mr Hall promising to take it gratuitously. A scricultural company has been inaugurated. Bismith is being exported. Wheat is rising ; Gs Gd being given for it, shipped. Tauranga, May ooThe Lord Ashley arrived here early this morning. She left at noon for Auckland. Colonel Moule is a passenger for Wellington. Graiiamstown, May 22, 1 p.m. The Caledonian Company have lodged 20,01 G ounces in the bank. The Bass Rock, near the Nonpareil, have taken out splendid specimens. The Middle Star have crushed three tons, which yielded G ounces of gold. Dixon’s No. 1 crushing of 47 tons gave 194 ounces. The Golden Line opened a good reef, and the scrip is enquired for. The new reef is supposed to he one of the Golden Crown’s. No. 2 has every appearance of containing gold. The Caledonian Company took out 8 cwt. of rich specimens, and about 3000 ounces will be lodged this afternoon. Christchurch, May 27. A movement is on foot amongst the Scotch residents here to have a dinner or some public gathering at an early date, to commemorate the marriage of the Marquis of Lome to H.R.H. the Princess Louise. Naluer, May 2Gth. McKenna, the Wairoa mailman, was drowned in the Maliaka river oix Wednesday. The steamer Napier is bar-bound at Wairoa. Mr McLean held a meeting at the Pakowhai with the natives on the Queen’s birthday.
