THE BONAPARTE FAMILY AND THE LETTER “M.”
An ingenious correspondent sends us the following : “ Naooleon I General Marbouf was the first who acknowledged the military genius of Napoleon I. at the school at Bnenne, Marengo, the first battle he won; and by the battle of Meras he sub lued Italy. Martiers was one of his first and best genera.s. Moreau acted as a traitor to him, and Joachim Murat, one of the best generals of cavalry the world ever saw, alter being a grand duke and king, was the first martyr in his case; Marie Louise was his empress; Moscow the commencement of his iuiu ; Mettcraicb beat him in diplomacy, feix of his marshals —Masscua, Martior, Mannont, Macdonald, Murat, Moncry, and 23 genera s —had all names commencing with a M. His first largo battle was that of Montcnatte; his last that of Mont Saint Jean. _ Maret, Duke of Bassano, was his most intimate councillor. He won the battles of Muleisimo, Montmirail, Monterau, ami Montmatre. Milan in Italy was the first, and Moscow the last capital in an enemy s country into which ho entered as victor. He lost Egypt through mismanagement of Menou, and sent General Miolhs to make Pope Pius VII. a prisoner. Mallet hred a shot at him ; Marmont left him first; then Murat. His principle ministers were Maret, Montallivet, and Mallieu; his chancellor Montasqieu, his last stay in Prance, Malmaison, he surrendered to Capt. Maitland, of the Bellerophon. Monthalon and his valet Marshand accompanied him to St. Helena, If we consider the history of his nephew, Napoleon 111., we find that this letter is also of great importance. The Empress Eugenie was foimerly Countess Monti jo ; his truest friend was Morny. Malakofl and Mamelon •were "tUo greatest 'triumpb.s of th.e French Army iu the Crimean War. In Italy, Montebello and Magenta arc the greatest battles in favor of ihe French. Marshal MaoMahou was created Duke of Magenta, as also Felissicr Duke of Malakofl. Napoleon HI. entered Milan after winning the battle of Marignano. After the battle of Solferino he remained before the walls of Mantua. Since 1866 the letter “M” has not been favorable to the Bonapartes. There was first Mexico and Maximilian; in the present war “M” has failed altogether. Marshal McMahon, prisoner of war at Sedan; Montauban, prisoner at Metz; and the supposed fearful Mitrailleuse, nowhere. Mayence should have been the basis of the French operations. On the Moselle the battles should have been decided, instead of which the Germans took Sedan, on +.he River Maas, and next Metz, the virgin f ,rtress. There is finally a great “M" iu tie destiny of the pr sent Napoleon Moltke.
