It is supposed that when the census returns are all made up, the population of the County of Westland will be found to be nearly if not quite 16,000, of whom a very large majority, probably two-thirds, are adult males. The population of Marlborough province is seldom at 5026—3076 males, and 1030 females.
Morris Connell, a well-known miner and agi'ator in tho Bull r district, has been sent to prison for a month for brutally assaulting a woman at Addison’s Flat.
The bon Mr Sewell is now visiting Westland. The Grey Hirer Argus , says :—We understand Mr Sewell is engaged in inspecting the gaols and lunatic asylums of the Colony, probably with a view of the approaching session of the Assembly for the creation of a Central Establishment of both kinds for the whole of the Middle Island.” At Boss, Westland, one Wi'liam Christie has been committed for trial on a charge of obtaining a negotiable security by false pretences. The prisoner j was remanded from Dunedin.
One of the most gratifying features of the Citizen’s Ball, given at Greymouth during the visit of the Governor to that town, was the demonstration made by the Volunteer Fire Brigade, who lined the streets at short intervals from the Melbourne Hotel to the Masonic Hall. Each man held a lighted torch, and the effect was exceedingly imposing.
The Westport District Court sat on April 25, when the only prisoner for trial, Edward Harris, was found guilty of stealing a cheque, and was seut to prison for twelve months.
A contract has been entered into between a gentleman acting on behalf of the Westland Count) Government, and a Melbourne linn, for the construction of a prison van for Hokitika. The cost of the machine in question is to be 1.00, but the Eraiiiif/ Star thinks it doubtful if the County will receive a bcuelit commensurate to the sum expended. A correspondent of the Thanes Advertiser thus amusingly desc ! ibes the reasons for the usual remark that “ the share market is brisk I have, by the courtesy of the gentleman iu charge of the telegraphic department here, been put iu possession of some of the telegrams lelt rashly on the counter by the sharebrokers and other a few days ago, and about which a notice appeared iu the papers. I append a few of the most interesting “To Erick, Thames ; Must make a rich find in Doodlembuck. Cannot sell otherwise. Slick, Auckland.”—“ To Slick, Auckland : Find made. Newspaper people, correspondents and all, liquored up. Right. Brick, Thames.”—“To Slither, Thames: Sold two Caledonians. Have not got them to hand over. Buy two at LSO. Smoucher, Auckland.”—“ To Smoucher, Auckland : No fear. Half prolits, or 1 split. Slither, Thames.”—“To Slither, Thames: Jonmck. 0. K. Smoucher, Aucklau i.” After this who will dare deny that the share mar* ket is brisk,
