The Nevada. This fine vessel, after a rapid run from Auckland, including a long detention at Napier, arrived at Wellington at four o’clock this morning ; and there her officers were enter tamed at a public dejeuner, which we are informed by private telegram was a decided success ; the Superintendent of Wellington (Mr Fitzhorbeit) presiding. The Nevada was to leave for the South at live p m., and may be expected to arrive at Port Chalmeis on Wednesday. We hear that it is intended to charter the Geeloir/, which will convey a party of ladies and gentleman to meet her outside the Heads ; and the Harbor Company’s steamers are to be laid on to convey, at cheap rates, visitors to the vessel during her stay here. We do not hear much about the projected banquet to the officers of the Nevada, but hope for the credit of the place that the project will not be allowed to fall through. After the example of Auckland and Wellington, which is to be followed by Christchurch, Dunedin can surely do something.

Princess Theatre.—“ Masks and Faces ” and the “ Widow’s Victim ’’ drew a very fair house on Saturday. It was with regret we observed the inconsiderate conduct of the pit in clamoring for an encore of a dance incidental to the character of Peg Woffington, quite regardless of the visible illhealth of the lady who sustained the part. We are happy to add that the firmness of the stage manager, aided by the more discriminate of the audience, prevented the thoughtless and unfeeling desire of the multitude from taking effect. It is announced that the house has been purchased this evening by a company of gentlemen, who have subscribed for a grand distribution of gifts, said to be worth sixty guineas ; and if the distribution be carried out in the manner suggested, it will no doubt attract a good many persons to the house. Accident. — We hear that an accident occurred to Messrs, Swanston and Warburton’s Oamaru coach on Saturday, it being overturned into a gully in descending the road across the Horse Shoe range, near Palmerston. No one was on the coach but the driver, who was censiderably bruised. The Mining Conference. —The returns have come in from Orepnki and Naseby. At the former place Mr J. Watson was returned, and at Naseby, Mr C. F. Heberts.

Land Sale. —A large crowd of persons were attracted to Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn, and Co.’s rooms this afternoon, by the announcement that the new township of Rotbsay, situated about two miles from Dunedin, abutt ng on the Port Chalmers line of railway, would be put up to auction. Sixty-live sections were offered for sale, three being reserved for public purposes by the proprietor, Mr Kilgour; and the highest

price obtained for a single section was L 49. The total sum realised was L! 246 10s, beb'g an average of about L3C an acre. The same firm sold six section'; of land, having frontages io Cumberland and Castle streets, for L 705. The fact that 1 ities could be given to the land at a nominal cost under the Land Transfer Act, and in the case of the Rothaay land that it lay in close proximity to the railway, gave a spirit to the bidding which has not been seen here for many years.
