NEW BOOKS.

rolled to a -Mother on the Mamnement of ],r r children. By M. Ohavasse. Churchill an 1 ."'ons, London. Joseph Braithwaite, Arc sde, Dunedin. When hj; is considered that out of one hundred children born twenty-ax_ die before they are five years old, and that it is as serted “ a great majority of those who die ought not to di) ” any work that gives plain and simple rules for their management during the time they remain under parental control must prove a boon to the world. Like many other assertions of bye-gone days, the dictum that a “woman must be either a fool ora physician before she reaches for-y years of age” has more of sound than sense in it. Observation and experience may rave taimht her much, but with modern aid a woman at twenty may know more about the management of children, and be ab.e to give sounder reasons for it, than her grandmother at forty. Mr. Chavassc has written two very readable works on the subject. He has avoided long scientific descriptions, and has contrived in a few short questions and answers, devoid of a ientilic terms, to show plainly what should be done to secure for children sonnd minds in healthy well-deve-loped bodies. It is somewhat umortunate for the world that it is difficult to move mankind in a new, however right direction. Men and women c’ing to customs, notwithstanding science pr.iv s them pernicious and in spite of the efforts of writers ike Mr Gbavasse, most of those who read his works will not practically allow themselves to beneht by them. By sh.w degrees, however, the truth will make its way, and in order to hasten its march, to save human life and to adopt the best means of laying a foundation for a healthy and happy existence for future generations, we commend this work to all clrsses in the full assurance that those who read it carefully will be better informed intellectually and morally.
