SURRENDER OF THE UREWERA TRIBE. (From the, Southern Cross, April 21 ) Our Tauranga correspondent writes “On Friday last, Captain G. Hair, of the Native Contingent, and an orderly, arived with intelligence that Major Eopatahad surprised a party of Te Kooti’s followers, killed twenty-live, and taken a number of prisoners.”

Very important news reaches us last night iu Auckland. Some time ago it will be remembered that a few of the Urewera tribe gave themselves up ; and two native chiefs, then residing at Napier, named respectively Paerau and Whenuanai, were quietly despatched by the Government to the Urewera country te see what could be done with that hitherto hostile tribe. These native chiefs, being thoroughly instructed in the pacihc intentions of the Government, but also their

firmnes to punish should such a coure' J*' P e ‘ ccssary, have been instrumental ingathering all the remnants of that tribe. ’lired with war and hardships, they have forsaken the waJ pah ; deserted Te Kooti, and all other rebels; and piaced thtm. selves in the hands of the authorities. They have f -rcsworn all their hostile riSs and resolved to live under the shadow of the Queen’s flag. We understand the Government has taken the question of their future disposal into consideration an that for the future the remnants of t..e Urewera tribe will be gathered together Ruatahuna, which will be their only sett ment. -
