first four days of the passage, and fresh south-west winds since.
Passengers.—For Wellington : Mr and Mrs Gilbett. For Lyttelton :Mr and Mrs Bain, Miss Biggs, Messrs Gee, D. Mills, and Heywood. For Otago : Miss Caldwell, Messrs Aldridge, Gunn, and J. Shannon. The Christchurch coach, due on Wednesday, has not yet arrived. Melbourne, April 29. Parliament was opened with the usual formalities. The speech promised Education and Land Amendment Bills. The Council adopted the address in reply. The debate in the Assembly on the reply has been adjourned till Tuesday. The contractors for the second section of the North-Eastern Railway have completed the necessary bond, and commence work at once. Frederick Dicker Hamilton, wellknown in Otago and Canterbury sporting circles, has b;eu ordered to pay ten shillings weekly towards the maintenance of his chi’d, Emma Jones. Commercial. —Flour is firmer. Sales of New Zealand are reported LI 4 10s. Adelaide, country, and Victorian, town, brands, realised Lls to Lls ss. Wheat is firm. Twelve thousand bushels of Adelaide wheat were offered at auction yesterday ; a hundred bags were sold at Gs 9d, and balance withdrawn. Oats are dull of sale at 3s 4d and 3s 7d. Sales of new Patna rice have been made at L 23.

The Legislative Council have read the Tariff Bill a second time, some members stating they would propose amendments in committee.
Heavy rains have been falling since Wednesday night. The races have been postponed till next Saturday, in consequence.
Mr Joseph Dyer, formerly secretary of the Sydney Insurance Company., and afterwards manager of Grevilie’s Company, Melbourne branch, has been appointed resident secretary for the New Zealand branch at Wellington. Adelaide, The Benola, steamer, broke her shaft off Macdonuell bay, and sent a boat ashore to report the accident. She is uow returning to Adelaide under canvass. Wheat has advanced. Sales are made at 5s 7£d to 5s 8d at auction. Kerosene ex Anne, fetched 2s 6d to 2s 6£d.
