CIVIC JOBBERY.

To the Editor. Slr —Some per.-< n, inappropriately assuming th; name of ‘ “ Fair Play,- and who appears to have found a mark’s noet, writes in your issue of yesterday a tirade again-t myself and the Mayor, on the subject of the tender for painting the Town Hall. There is an old saying, “ First be sure you arc right, and then go ahead,” which, had “ Fair Play” anted upon, might have saved him much display of virtuous indignation. But, singularly diough, he : s wrong in everyone of his statements. In the first place, lam not a carpenter, but a builder and contractor, wh ch, I venture to imagine, is a somewhat different thing. In the second, his Worship is not now the painter, nor has his Worship any thing to do, directly or indirectly, with the tender referred to, or the work it entails, as “ Fair Play ” might have found had he taken the trouble to inquire. In the third plae •, I am not respousiide to any person for my work, except to Mr Mirams, the City Surveyor. It may be worth the while of “Fair Flay,” the next time he ventures to write to a newspaper, first to make himself assure I of the facts, and thus avoid the risk of making a tissue of mis-statements like those of his letter of yesterdaj’. With regard to the tender being given to myself in preference to any of the other persons tendering, the fact was simply that my tender was the lowest by 10s ; and I do not think it is an unusual thing to accept the lowest tender. Trusting 3ou will oblige me by space for this letter, I am, &c., Wm. Daleiel. Dunedin, April 28.
