DEPUTATION.

This morning a deputation waited upon Messrs. E. B. Cargill, Provincial Secretary, and C. E Haughton, Secretary of Laud and Works. The deputation included Messrs. Every, Begg, and Grainger, and was introduced by Messrs. W. H. .Reynolds and J. Seaton, M. P.C.’s. Their purpose was to introduce to the notice of the Government a proposal to take a road across the Bay from Police street to the quarry reserve at Anderson's Bay. They were accompanied by 7 Air. John Millar, F.S. A. A plan was produced by Mr. Every, as an alternative, which differed somewhat from the line proposed in the petitions presented on the same subject yesterday. His proposal was to run a straight road from the corner of the recreation ground south to Vauxhall Point, on the opposite side of the Bay. Air. Alillar introduced a phi 11 prepared some years ago and submitted to the Provincial Council in 18(15, suggesting a circular line of reclamation Mid wharfage round the head of the Bay ; to start opposite the Imperial M otel and to end at Vauxhall Point. By this plan the whole of the swampy foreshore, now the nursery of miasma, would be converted into valuable building sites or ornamental ground, snd a tidal scour would be secured that would tend to deepen the harbor. The further advantage would be attained of a line of main

drainage for the City sewage, which might bo discharged into the ocean at Lawyer’s Head, or better still utilised as manure. Mr Millar’s phn was considered to be the best provided the expense of carrying it into effect is nob too great. Mr Cargill believed the necessary soundings were in possession of the Government, and promised that the the subject would be taken into consideration by the Executive to-day. In the course of the interview, Mr E. 11. Cargill pointed out that ttie line of tramway indicated in Mr Millar’s plan, wh ch won d form a branch of the Southern Trunk Kail way, could be made at less expense than a metalled road, and would be a means »t effectually aiding in the defence of the harb r, by a fib ding facility for the rerdy transport of artillery.
