CIVIC JOBBERY.

To the Editor. Sir, —Reading the Daily Times report of the City Council yesterday, I was astoni-hed to see that the tender of Mr Dalziell—who is a carpenter, and not a painter—for painting the Town Hall, was accepted, while that of the painter was rejected, when there was only a difference of 10s between them. Oh no ! it would never do to accept a painter’s tender, for then his Worship would not become the painter; but his Worship is now the painter—so you see, Mr Editor, there is a little log-rolling in some of the departments of our Council. But the specifications provide that his Worship shall be inspector of the work, and it is to be done under his direction and to his satisfaction. Who then will become the inspector ? for in the first place the City Surveyor must have handed over the works, not being able to deal with the art of housepainting, and his Worship cannot be inspector over his own work. Now, Mr Editor, will the Council have to appoint another inspector, seeing that the Surveyor is unable to do so ? If you can answer me this, you will oblige Play. Dixnedin, April TJ.

A DISCLAIMER. To the Editor. Sir, —Apologies are something like comparisons—odious ; bat I must in justice to myself ask space in your paper to state that I am not the person referred to in to day’s Times, in the gambling case, dice « Brown, and 1 am prompted to do so from the fact of having been several times accosted by many of my customers, who if they thought i was the party, their trade and support would be withdrawn. X am, &0,. Alkxr. Macdoxau), Old Club Stables.
