MAYOR’S COURT.
This Day, (Before His Worship the Mayor and J, B. Bradshaw, Esq., J. P.) BREACH OF THE LICENSING ORDINANCE. Edward Brown, landlord of the Newmarket Hotel, was clrrged with. allowing gambling in his licensed house on the 23rd inst. The evidence of Sergt. o’.\eefe and other witnesses went to show that dice throwing was carried on for a couple of hours, between 2 and 6 a. m., on the day in question.. The Bench said they were afraid too much gambling was carried on in licensed houses ; so that it was absolutely incumbent upon them to put a stop to it. The defen hint’s offence was aggravated by the fact of its having occurred on Sunday morning. A fine of L 5 and costs was imposed. OFFENCES AGAINST THE BYE-LAWS, Charles Lillibury was fined ss. and costs for neglecting to keep his premises clean, and Thomas Montague 10s. and costs for "a similar offence.
