An inquest was held this morning on the lire at Major Green’s. The verdict of the jury was that it originated from sparks from an adjoining chimney.

A man named Peter Mordon was drowned at Pohui on Sunday last while suffering from delirium tremens. His body was brought to town, a distance of 40 miles, anti over a rough country, for an inquest, which' will be held this afternoon.

The new Provincial Council was opened to-day, and elected Mr Colenso, Speaker, and Mr Ormond, Superintendent ; after which it adjourned for a fortnight. New Plymouth, April 20. via Patea, April 22. Yesterday morning Trooper Kennedy, while searching for the remains of the men supposed to have fallen overboard from the Ottawa’s boat on the 14th inst. while quarrelling and fighting, picked up part of a back-bone, as well as a thigh bone, and a leg bone with the foot and boot attached to it. The boot was identified as having belonged to the seaman, Webb. The bones were perfectly flcshless. The search was continued to-day, but nothing more was found. Tauranga, April 24. A messenger has been permitted by Te Hira to pass through the forbidden territory. Afterwards the contractor for the extension of the telegraph line was allowed to pass by Te Hira. Mr James Mackay, junr., having requested permission, the Natives at Ohinemuri stated to his messenger that the overland mail service will be reestablished in a few days. Commissioner Clarke and Mr Mackay are hourly expected at Ohinemuri.
