ALLEGED THEFT. Robert .Tenner Archer, who is both deaf and dumb, was charged with stealing a cheque, the property of Eraser, road contractor. The facts are shortly these : — On the 30th ult. Mr Fraser was in the Sussex Hotel, George street; he had occasion to take out his pocket-hook, and in opining it dropped a cheque for L 3, which the accused picked up. He could not he induced to give it up ; and when cautioned of the danger of keeping it, replied it was all right —that he hid destroyed it. It transpired shat he afterwards pasted the pieces together, and cashed the cheque at the Red Lion Hotel. The case was remanded till Monday.
