PRINCESS THEATRE.
A good, but, except in the pit, not a crowded house, greeted the appearance of Mr and Mrs Gourlay last night; probably tbe inclement weather kept away from the circle many faces that we are iu the habit of seeing there. “Rob Roy” was the selected play, and the part thor.ia taken by Mr Gourlay, the Bailie ; Mrs Gourlay, of course, being Diana Vernon. In some sort Mr Gourlay invests the character with features now to us, and there is a general repose about his acting, very natural and quite “ unstagy indeed there are sco-es of people iu Otago with a dialect in belter, or worse, (according to the proclivities of the reader), thin that of the Bailie of Mr Gourlay; ou the whole it must bo conceded that Mr Gourlay is ver} 7 cxccl'ent in the part, at the same time wc are hound to observe that we have scon a Bailie more to our liking. Diana Vernon is a part neilhc" long nor arduous, but Mrs Gourlay played sufficiently well to render it a prominent one ; of late we have hcon so unaccustomed to singing, that it was quite refreshing to hear M. Floury give the preliminary tap tap. Francis Osbaidistone was entrusted to Mr Collier, who acquitted himsedf with credit, being in very good voice. Mi s Carry George, who played Helen M ‘Gregor, was evidently too unwell to do Justice to the part; of the other characters we say nothing. “Rob Roy” will be repeated this evening.
