The barque Robert, from New York via Melbourne, was signalled from the Heads this afternoon. Taking advantage of the favorable change of wind to-day, the newly-arrived steamer Pretty Jane, from Glasgow, and the schooner Gleaner, from Hobart Town, with a cargo of Colonial produce, sailed up to Dunedin this afternoon. The brigantine Sword Fish, with produce, was towed up on the flood, and berthed alongside the Rattray street Jetty, The s.s. Storm Bird, from the Bluff, arrived at the Port early this morning, and steamed to Dunedin this afternoon. The Government have received a telegram stating that the Luna was unable to communicate with the shore. While wai ting opportunity to enter, the Hollyford, she was driven from her anchorage by a 8. W. gale. She made for.Greymouth and arrived there this morning. The twin screw steamer Pretty Jane, from Glasgow arrived under canvass at the Heads yesterday, and was towed in by the Geelong last evening. Her commander, Captain Nichols (formerly of the Faria), reports that on leaving Lam'lash Bay on Nov. 28tb, a continuation of westerly gales was experienced for . several days during which the starboard fore shrouds, fore stay, and some of the main rigging were damaged. On the passage to the equator light N.E. trades were met, after which good S.E. trades carried the vessel well south ; from the meridian of the Cape to arrival off the Snares on Wednesday, last westerly gales prevailed, thence northerly winds to arrival. The heaviest gale during the passage was met with on the coast. A few days before making the land, an accident occurred to the Chief officer, Mr Allen, who fell from the fqrc, yard, and though severely bruised and cut by the fall has since been able to resume his duties. The present rig of the Pretty Jane is that of a three-masted schooner which gives her quite a rakish appearance ; but being rather deep in the water and having just arrived from a long passage her appearance can hardly he said to bo prepos•ing—she will appear to greater advantage when lightened and painted; judging from her fine lines and general appearance there is every reason to believe that she will make a smart coaster and with engines of 35 h.p., a good speed may be expected. She is the property of the New Zealand Meat Preserving Company.
