MAYOR’S COURT.
This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor ) DRUNKENNESS. Alex, Greavc was fined ss. BREACH OF THE LICENSING OHIINANCE. Chas. Green pleaded guilty lo a charge of permitting gambling in his Hocused house, tho Octagon hotel, on the morning of the Ist instant. His Worship remarked that when the defendant obtained the transfer of the house from Mr Drummond, the chairman of the licensing bench (Mr Strode) cautioned him, remarking that if complaints wore made agauist him he would deem it his duty to look into the matter very closely. The defendant observed this was the first complaint made against him, but Sergeant Thompson whilst admitting that it was the first time the present licensee was brought before the Bench, stated complaints had been made to the police against the house. His Worship said on this occasion he would impose the mitigated penalty of 40s and costs; but if any other complaint were made against the licensee, he would deal wiih him very severely. The practice was getting very common with hotelkeepers not only to keep their houses open after hours, but to suffer gambling in them. OFFENCES AGAINST THE BVE-LAWS. Flora Wilson was fined 5s and cos!s for allowing a heifer to stray ; and John Collar 2s Gd for allowing a horse to wander. Wm. White, driver of one <f tho “threepenny ’busses,” was charged with plying for hire off the stand. Tho inspector said the cabmen complained against the defendant being allowed to drive all over the town while they were confined to the stand. His Worship said the defendant, like other cal m >,n, should keep to the stand; but if he desired that tho Imperial Hotel should be declared a stand for “ 'busses,” all ho had to do was to petition the 0 ty Council, and they no doubt would grant his request. Under the circumstances the case would bo dismissed.
