Clerk of the Course :—Mr J, 11. Mills. The first races on the Forbury Park ground to 'k pla - c to-day. Toe weather was tine, and a' out three thousand persons took advauti.cof the nearness of the race-course to the City. The roads were thronged with passengers on foot, in cars, on horseback, and in equipages of every description. Tho g ound is in much better condition than wca anticipated, and does great credit to the care aid attention of the com; any. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by his Honor the Superintendent, several ladies, and Captain Pitt, arrived about one o’clock, and was received with cheers. On the ground w. re amusements of various descriptions, which were availed of extensively by by visitors. The first race was for the MAIDFX PLATHI, Of 50 sovs ; entrance, 3 sovs ; one mile and a quarter. One mile; weigh t for age. For horses that have never won an adyertised prize exceeding L‘2s. After one false start the horses got well away together ; Tiger taking the lead, which lie maintained for nearly a quarter of a mile when Swindle went to the front, was never headed, and won hy about two lentils. Time, 2min. 41sec. The order they came iii was— Swindle 1 Tiger 2 Comet - - - - - 3 Betting—G to 4 against Swindle. The next race w’as the great event of the day, namely— FOKUIRY HANDICAP, Of 120 sovs, with a sweeps'akes of 3 sovs each; the second horse to receive the amount accruing from the sweepstakes • nomination, 2 sovs ; acceptance, 3 sovs • One and a half mile. ’ Eight horses were entered for the race seven, however, only starting; Miss Flat being reserved for tho St. Kild i Stakes. Slander was the favorite, but the result proved how inaccurate were the predictions of the public. A good start be in" effected Catapult took the lead, and a spirited contest ensued. After the first half-mile Slander and Sir Tattou made a spurt, the latter coming up abreast of Catapult, Bobby Bums following closely and at last heading Sir Tatton. 'Slander soon fell in the rear’ and the positions of the leading horses were- well maintained to the end, the result being : Catapult "2 Bobby Burns ... 2 Sir Tatten . 3 Time: 3 minutes 3 seconds.
HANDICAP TROTTING RACE, Of 30 sovs; entrance, 2 sovs; three miles and a distance. Optional saddle or harness ; no we'ght under 10st lib. Two horses only were entered for this race, Magic and Dick. Three miles and a distance—Magic starting at scratch, and giving 240 yards to Dick. Before a mile and a-half had been r. n, Magic took the lead, and all the friends of Dick were in despair. At this moment twenty to one was offered on Magi’-, but there were no takers. When two and a-half miles had been run, Dick gave in, allowing Magic to come in at his case. ST. HILDA STAKES, Of 50 sovs; entrance, 3 sovs. One mile; weight for age. Seven hois s were entered; five only started, Lyi.dou and Vatterina being scratched. Backbiter was the favorite. A good start was made, Backin'.er taking Mid keeping the lead, followed by Slander and Exile. x\iiss Flat, at about half a mile from home, put on her steam, heading Exile and Slander, and maintaining her position throughout. The following was the result : Backbiter 1 Miss Flat Exile An excellent lunch was provided by the stewards, of which His Excellency Sir George Bowen and a number of gentlemen partook. The healths of her M -jesty the Queen, Sir George Bowen, and his Honor the Superintendent, were drank.
