THE COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING.

The Southern Cross of alie 17th hist., gives the fo lowing account of die shooting ou the previous clay : “ The tiring for the running prizes was proceed cl with. As it was the last of the champion sot, considerable interest was evinced by the spectators and competitors. Before the match commenced, Captain Wales, of No. 1 Company, Hide Volunteers, Otago, was the highest aggregate scorer with 317 ; Reid, of Otago, was 315 ; Taylor and Caristie, also of Otago, were 311 ; and Goldie, the champion of 1870, was 308. Of these Taylor was the first to tire, scoring 40 with 12 hits. Goldie also scored the same number, and Wilson made the splendid score of 51, which made the aggr. gate of both 355, Taylor having made 350. Wales being the highest .aggregate scorer, there was great excitement wh n his squad was firing, and, when on on counting the score it was found he had made 40 poiu's, it was considered tbit Ivs chance for the belt looked very well, as Keid was the only man to fire who had any prospect of heating him and he would have to score 48 to tie. Reid’s admnvrs. however, believed him equal to the task, and they would probably not have been disappointed bad be not met with a variety of accidents which materially affected his shooting. Ho ran the point of the ramrod into the palm of his hand while loading his second round, and inflicted rather an awkward wound, dropped one of the bullets, lost his caps, and was altogether most unfortunate. As it was, he hit ten times and scored 39 points, making his aggregate 354. Christie, the champion of ISOS, made 48 ; aggregate, 353. G Jdie and Wilson, having tied for the fifth prize, fired off at 200 yards, and the former made a bull’s-eye, and the la'ter a centre. THE CHAMPION BELT AND PRIZES.
