Wellington, March 22.
The Government have received a copy of the contract made by Mr Vogel with Messrs Webb and Holliday. It is almost identical witli Mr Neilson’s, and makes New Zealand practically the head quarters of the Australian steam communication with America, and the steamers are to touch at the four ports indicated in Mr Macandrew’s resolution. There is a subsidiary agreement with Mr Hall for a continuance of his line till the other commences, and an arrangement with the owners of the Phcebe for a temporary service. The contract and other documents will be shortly published. In a telegram to the Premier, the Hon, D. M‘Lcan says : —The contract for the mail service is concluded with Messrs W. H. Webb and Holliday, without reference to subsidy from the United States. Invercargill, March 2d. The holiday to-day is only observed by the Government offices and the banks.
