EDUCATION BOARD.
The Education Board held an adjourned meeting in the Superintendent’s office this forenoon. The members present were—His Honor the Superintendent, and Messrs Reid and Duncan.
The minutes the former meeting having been read, The Secretary reported that the following teachers had been appointed during the half year :—Miss Jane Hill, Middle D nedin ; Miss Calcutt, South Dunedin; Miss Macallum, Miss Robertson, and Mrs Wallace, Port Chalmers ; Mr E. Webber, Waipori; Mr James Ilcid, Taieri Beach; Mrs Neil son, Wetherstones; Mr Stack, Macraes; Mr Chisholm, Waiwera; Mr Montgomery, Mount Cargill; Mr Murdoch, Thomsons ; Mr Macandrew, Grey town; Mr Thomas, Albertowu j Mr Forster, Brighton ; MiHay, Highcliff: and Mr Topham Nokomai. A number of claims for repairs from the Otago and Southland schools were referred to the Government.
Memorials for the establishment of schools at Dunkeld (Beaumont), Evans’s Flat (Tuapeka), Table Rill, and Manuka Creek were also referred to the Government for consideration.
Mr J. H. Baker, of the Invercargill Survey Office, was appointed agent for the Southland education reserves.
The following school committees applied for additional teachers :—Oama'ru, an assistant and a pupil teacher; North Taieri, Wakari, Mount Ida, Waipori, a schoolmistress each ; Arrow, a sewing mistress ; Dunedin and Clyde, pupil teachers. In

The Inspector was instructed to makeeuquiry and report as to certain complaints frnin Bins Spur School Committee respecting the teacher there. A letter was read from Major Richardson, requesting the Board to concur in the vesting of the lliehanlson Scholarship Fund in the Otago University Council. The Board readily agreed to the request. Th- Secuetaky laid before the meeting a number of applications for school buildings, but these were also referred to the Government for consideration. Mr Hislop then submitted a leport respecting the Southland school ’, which was approved of, and the recommendations it contained were ordered to ho carried into effect. The main recommendation is that steps be taken as soon as possible for the election of school committees in Invercargill, and other places where schools are already in operation. Mr Hislop brought before the meeting the great necessity which exists for the inspection of the schools, and it was resolved to request the Government to sanction the appointment of Mr Taylor as assistant secretary until the meeting of the Provincial Council, iu order that Mr Hislop may be able to visit localities where the presence of an inspector is much needed. After transacting routine business the meeting was adjourned.
