THE COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING.

The firing commenced at Auckland on the 7th inst. The weather was fine and clear. The competition opened with Second s,-t (skirmishing), in any position whepc the competitors had to fall in at ex : tended qrder—a target at an unknown distance being opposite to each, and when ten minutes was allowed for firing at such distances (advancing and retiring) as directed by the bugle. The following arc the results :

A protest has been entered against Reid, Oraigie and Taylor fired off for the 3rd prize, when the former won. The second match was the first sot (juding distance), live shots in any position, at any range not exceeding 600 yards

MTntosh, Auckland 16 The second day was cloudy and showery. The first nntch was the third set, which is divided into two stages. The second stage at 400, 500, and GOO yards—position, kneeling at 400 yards, and any at other two; five shots at each range—was taken first. The following are the results :

Fourth set; ranges 200, 500, and 600 yards, five shots at each range; position, standing at 200 yards, and any at the remaining range. The following are the prize takers :

The firing was continued on the 10th—the match being the fifth set—3oo, 400, and 500 yards range ; live shots at each range. The weather was magnificent, and the shooting splendid. Twenty men made 40 points and upwards. The following are the results :

Second set.—For Cadets over 14. Pangea 200 and 300 yards ; five shots at each range —any position. Craig, Christchurch 31 Wood, Hutt 30 Chuck, Blenheim 29 Paxton, Christchurch 29 C. Eeid, Otago 29 First set—Hawke, Canterbury 16 Seventh set (rapidity). Ranges, 200 and 300 yards ; five minutes at each range, to commence at the first shot; competitors to come loaded, but not capped to the firing point. The firing to-day (the 11th) was confined to the 200 yards range. The three highest scorers are : Buchanan, Otago • • 89 Wil on, Otago 7G Chamberlain, Westland • 66 The next range will be fired on Monday. Up to the date of the latest telegrams, four out of the eight sots by which the Championship is decided, had been fired off, From the subjoined scores it wil 1 be seen that the Otago men are all close together, and the e need be little fear that the belt will remain iu the Province. These numbers do not include the first stage of the rapidity match : Points.
