The nomination for a member of the Provincial Council took place to-day. Messrs Matthew Hay, John Herbert, J. G. Brown, and H. Bastings were prpposed, Christchurch, March 7. At the Criminal Sessions yesterday, George Augustus Schmidt, for stabbing with intent, was sentenced to two years’imprisonment; Frederick Stanley, obtaining money under false pretences, to twelve months ; and Mark Turner, for bestiality, to five years’ penal servitude. At the Criminal Sittings to-day, John James Smith, for larceny, was sentenced to eighteen months’ hard labor ; Walter Johnson, a hardened criminal, for larceny from a warehouse, was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude. Hokitika, March 7. Joseph Conn, a livery stable keeper at the South Spit, was swept over the bar iu a boat and drowned yesterday. At the inquest to-day, a verdict of “ accidentally drowned ” was returned. Mauson’s drapery establishment had a narrow escape , from being destroyed by fire. The calendar is very light, there being only two cases of obtaining money and goods under false pretences. Both prisoners were found’ guilty.
