The Criminal Sittings opened to-day. The calendar is remarkable for a large number of cases-, including four charges of murder and several other grave offences. Beattie, police sergeant at Leithfield, has been committed for trial for embezzlement.
Invercargill, March 6. Business was suspended again to-day. The Governor, the viceregal party, and the Superintendent have gone to Win ton per railway to formally open the northern line. A large number of people accompanied them. Auckland via Thames, March 3. Mr M'Lean and staff arrived at Alexandra to-day. Tapihana refuses to leave Pirongoa, although ordered by the King to do so. Mr M'Lean visits Rewi and the Princess Sophia to-mor-row. The Luna, with the Southern Volunteers, arrived to-day. They were met by the City Volunteers, and, headed by the band of the Auckland Rifles, marched through the City. The Luna leaves for Wellington to-night. The Caledonian Company crushed over 10,000 ounces for the week. Shares are now up to LB2.
