Tho nomination of a member to represent Waikouaiti North in the Provincial Council, took place to-da} r . Tho following candidates were nominated : Mr John Smith, pi’oposed by Mr Donald Malloch, seconded by Mr A. G. Reid. Mr James Mills, proposed by Mr Joseph Bates, seconded by Mr James Pearce. The show of hands was—Mills, 12 ; Smith, 11. A poll was demanded, and will take' place on Thursday, Invercargill, March 4. The Governor gave a reception this morning, and then proceeded to Riverton. There was a large turn-out at the rabbit shooting yesterday afternoon at the Sandhills. His Excellency attends the theatre this evening, A trip to Stewart’s Island is spoken of for Monday, if the Rnngitoto arrives and can be chartered. Tho weather is dull, but inclined to clear up. Tho Storm Bird left for Dunedin to-day. Auckland via Thames, March 2. Mr Woodquest arrived to-day with tho machinery from the wreck of the .Airedale, He reports that Captain Kennedy and the crew are in good health, and are still working at the wreck. The dwelling-house of Mr Henry Elberd, Parnell, was destroyed by tire. The family narrowly escaped with their lives. The house and furniture were insured in tho Royal Insurance Company for LSOO. Bird, the English pedestrian, arrived from Sydney to-day. He purposes visiting the Southern Provinces early; Serious floods occurred in the Mercury and Kennedy Bay districts. Tho bridges and crops were destroyed. Te Hira again threatens to stop the Tauranga mail. Arrived. Edinburgh, from Newcastle.
