BELL WARD ELECTION.

To the Editor. g lß) —Being present yesterday at the nom‘nation of candidates lor the office of councillor to represent Bell Ward in the City Council, I heard Mr Woodland say in the course of his remarks, that some had an objection to his coming forward because he is a publican. A very good objection too, I think. Mr Woodland asked the electors whether a publican is not- as good “ as any other man?” I emphatically say, without hesitation, no, he is not, because he is eat Tying on a business which is the cause of the ruin of thousands of bis fellow men. It is a

well known fact that the cause of two-thirds of the' crime* 'that arccommitted can be traced to fthe,: ggstibHf Bit’ xicating drink. How many fathers are there who spend their money in the public house, while children are in want of bread to eat and clothes to wear ? What is the cause of so many families being deprived of a common education ? The answer is that the money that should be spent in the education of the children is spent by the father at the public house. I would call Mr Woodland’s attention to the fact that there are about eight hundred lunatics in the Colony of New Zealand, and that eighty per cent, of tbe above number were made lunatics through tbe use of intoxicating drink. I will conclude by remarking that a publican is not a fit and proper person to represent any community. lam,&c., A Lover op Truth.
