MAYOR’S COURT.

This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor and J. T. Thomson, Esq., J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. Isabella Wrey was charged with this offence. From the evidence it .appeared that the prisoner is a married woman, her husband being a honest, hardwork ng man, and has four young children, the eldest only ei<dit years, and the youngest as many months. She left her home, taking the children with her and went to a brothel in Dowling street, where the police found her and its occupants in a totally nude • tate, beastly intoxicated, and covered with filth. The witnesses agreed in describing the place as being in “a most abominably disgustin" state.” The Commissioner of Police said the husband was determined to keep the children from the wife, who was a oMifirmed drunkard, -and to rear them respectably. The woman if discharged would only get drunk again and make a noise about the children. The Bench, however, determined to discharge her, intimating that were she again brought up she would be dealt with very severely. VAGRANCY. Emma Hoare alias Wat-on, and Elizabeth Atkinson, two of the worst specimens of humanity that ever appeared in the dock at the Mayor’s Court, were charged with having no visible lawful means of support It was at the house occupied by them that the woman Wrey was found. They were each sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labor. RAPE, Joseph Carey, a convicted thief, was charged with having, at Dunedin, on the 19th instant, committed a rape upon Isabella Esplin, aged eight years. Evidence having been taken, the case was adjourned until Monday. NEGLECTING TO PAY ALIMONY. James Nimon was charged upon the information of his wife with neglecting to pay the sum of 12s weekly towards her support, as ordered by the Court. Mr Bathgate appeared for the complainant, and Mr Bai ton for the defendant. For the defence, adultery and other acts were set up as justification for the failure to contribute. A son of the complainant was the principal witness against her. (Left sitting)
