Dillon Bell addressed the electors in this portion of the Mataura district last night, and received a unanimous vote of confidence. Christchurch, February 8. The official survey on the Maori proves the sugar and other cargo to be in good order. Wellington, February 7. The Wellington election took place to-dav. Messrs Pearce and Hunter were returned, the numbers polled being : —- Pearce - - - 379 Hunter - - - 36G Ttavers - - - 315 Richmond - - 339 Borlase - - - 78 Martin - 33 There was great excitement. The successful candidates were drawn in a coach with six horses through the City. Messrs Borlase and Martin were also Government supporters, and lessened the majority of Messrs Pearce and Hunter. Auckland via Tauranoa, February 6. The election for the City West came off to-day, with the following result: — Gillies (Superintendent), 510 j Williamson, 508 ; Dignau, 200. Messrs Gillies and Williamson are therefore elected. Authentic information was received last Saturday that Tupihana’s party at Perongia has been twice reinforced, and now numbers about forty men. The settlers Ixave been warned to sleep in the Harapipi blockhouse. Natives are reported to be near there, and were seen on the ranges by several people yesterday. Mr Commissioner Branigan is suffering severely from the effects of sunstroke.
