Auckland via Thames, February 3,
The nomination for City West took place to-day. The show of hands was —Gillies, 117 j Williamson, 70 ; Dignan, 42. The last-named gentleman demanded a poll. Captain Ashley and the insurance company offer a reward of L3OO for the discovery of the person or persons who set fire to the ship City of Auckland. Arrived.—Bella Mary, from Hobart Town. The Caledonian Claim has declared a dividend of L2, and the Thames Gold Company a dividend of 7s Gd. The latest news from the Waikato reports all quiet. Auckland via Tauranoa, February 3. At a monster meeting of the Auckland Working Men’s Protection Society, it was decided to file a criminal information for libel against the editor of the Evening Steer. There was an extensive wool and flax sale to-day. Wool (greasy), 4|d to 6fd; washed, 7d to 10£ d ; locks and pieces, 3ld to 4d. Sheepskins,
3Jd to 3jd. Flax, Ll7 to L3O for good qualities ; raedimn qualities were almost unsaleable at L 6 to LlO.
Wellington, February 6,
The Wellington elections are over, except that for the City, which takes place to-morrow. The members elected are all Government supporters. The Ceheno arrived yesterday with fifty-nine immigrants and twelve cabin passengers, including six nuns—two each for Hawke’s Bay, Kelson, and Christchurch. She spoke the ship Glendower, from London to Sydney, eighty-four days out, having on board the Roman Catholic Bishop of Dunedin, Dr Moran, and several priests and nuns ; all well. The Governor sailed on Saturday on the following tour : —Hokitika, Martin’s Bay, Milford Sound, Dusky Bay, Stewart’s Island, and the Bluff, which he will reach by the Ist of March. He is accompanied by Commodore Stirling, and will visit Dunedin and the interior of Otago, Canterbmy, and Westland, and returns to Wellington by the middle of April. Dr Hector accompanies the Governor, and will examine the geological and other features of the country, and mark points for settlements. Much marine surveying will be done—the ship Acheron being the only ship of the navy that has visited these inlets since Captain Cook, Invercargill, February G, The Hon. Dillon Bell’s meeting on Saturday was largely attended. He received a unanimous vote of confidence, and his election is considered certain.
