MR MACANDREW AT MILTON.
To the Editor of the Evening Star.
Sir, —J. L. Gillies, Esq., acting Secretary in room of M r Reid, lias given your readers a digest of what he said and how he contradicted Mr Macandrew at Tokomairirq. I Wonder if Mr Gillies went to Tokoutairiro at his own expense, or at the expense of the Province, to catechise the Superintendent. How it does rankle in the stomach of this member of Executive that Mr Macandrew would not have him as Treasurer ! Surely Mr Gillies must have small concern for the duties of his trust when he leaves his office to attack a political opponent No wonder the country suffers when such mountebanks have the management of our affairs. It is reported—l do not know how true that Mr Gillies receives two guineas per day and travelling expenses for bis exalted opinions and august presence at the Executive Board. If this be so, it is high time this system of nepotism were put an end to. The country has already suffered quite enough from the do-nothing conduct of the Reid Ministry ; and the sooner such parasites as Messrs Gillies,'Mouat, and Co. are sent to ignominious oblivion, the better for the country. Yours, &e., 15. A. H. Dunedin, January 27«
