At the Clutha inspection fifty-four rank and file were present, and the company acquitted' itself very credit•ably. At the Bruce inspection fifty-two were present. This company showed a very great improvement on last year. At the competition for the second District prizes, Sergt. Scott was highest scorer with IG points. In addressing the ‘Bruce Company Colonel Harrington stated that all the volunteer companies were now to be supplied with a gray uniform. The reasons for adopting this color was because of its usefulness, and of its promotion of native industry.

The Post of yesterday says : —“ The Government prosecution against the Otago Daily Times is adjourned for one month for the attendance of witnesses, the s.ubpomas issued being to the proprietor of the Independent, the Hon. Mr Gisborne, and the Hon. Mr Yogel, for the defendant, who has declined to retract. It is not true, as stated in Greville’s telegram, that the proprietory of the Daily Thnes have repudiated all responsibility in connection with the defence.”
At-'f'icr.ANp via Thames, January The Committee of the Local I industries League have recommended moderate grants of land in aid of the growth of the beetroot and vine and promotion of sericulture, and premiums for the produce of those articles, and also recommend the introduction of a few French and Swiss. They have appointed a standing committee to urge the matter upon the General Government.
The damage to the City of Auckland is more serious than was at first appi'eheiided. The cargo damaged amounts to L' 20,000. The ship will ,bo raised to-mOrrow,
January 27. A fire this morning; destroyed the kerosene store, containing 12,000 cases, for town supply, valued at L 1,500. All uninsured. Mr W. T. Swanson has been elected for Newton. At the Eden nomination the show of hands was in favor of Mr Creighton. Mr Kerr demanded a poll. The City of Auckland lies in deeper water, and all attempts to raise her hitherto have been unsuccessful. Another deputation from the unemployed waited on the Superintendent to-day, who instructed them to furnish him with a list of the destitute and unemployed.
