MR MACANDREW AT MILTON.
To the Editor of the Evmlng Star. Sir—l have just been shown your report of Mr Macandrew’s meeting here, published in the Star of the 24th, and regret that anyone could be found capable of perpetrating such a hoax upon any journal. Notwithstanding the brevity of the report sent you, it contains twelve direct falsehoods. I shall only mention one or two. '(1.) Mr Houston did not propose the motion ; I did, and it was as follows :—“ That this meeting thanks Mr Maeandrew for his address, but, taking into account his conduct during the past four years, it is of opinion that a change in the Supefintendeucy is absolutely necessary for the furtherance of settlement, and true progress in Otago ; and also, in order to check the grasping policy of the General Government wi'.h respect to the revenues of the Province.” (2.) There were not “a perfect forest” of hands held up for the amendment. There were certainly not over fifty. (3.) The amendment was not put a second time ; my motion was put, and your informant is correct for once in saying “ it carried by a large majority”—l think about 100. (4.) Mr Maeandrew did not speak for two hours, nor for one ; and his speech was not a repetition of that delivered by him in the Ma-onic Hall. With reference to your informant’s remark as to the elixir man failing to put the motion, I would only say that the partiality he displayed was a disgrace to any community. It is not the first time he has act ed the imbecile when presiding, in prder to prevent a motion being passed, but he certainly acted it well on the occasion referred to,' and by which the cause of his candidate has suffered. However, it is well known in the district that he has good cause to pray for Mr Macandrew’s re-election. To some portions of their past lives the proverb “ birds of a feather,” &c., would be very applies able. I trust ypur sense of justice will induce you to give jmblicity to this communication. I am, &o , H. White.
